At the Risk of Seeming Ridiculous
Over 40 participants at the Foro Social de las Americas in Guatemala joined a dozen activists at New York's Brecht Forum for the first bi-continental on-line workshop in the Forum's history: writing a ten point document of Internet rights for the Hemisphere's peoples.
The event was sponsored and coordinated by May First/People Link.
In a two hour session, using software developed by MF/PL for the 2007 U.S. Social Forum and recently upgraded for use in bi-lingual and multi-locale discussions, participants in the two locales used the Internet to actually share an on-line workspace and literally become one workshop.
It is the first time in Social Forum history that such a workshop has been held.
The ten points as well as photos from both locations will be published soon.
The workshop group in Guatemala was led by MF/PL Co-Director Jamie McClelland and member Maritza Arrastia.
The NYC group was led by Co-Director Alfredo Lopez and Leadership Committee members Daniel Kahn Gillmor and Mallory Knodel.
We'll be posting photos and more commentary as the week goes on.
